What is Hermes Agent and how does it work?

You give it a task. Hermes sends it to your chosen AI model, uses tools, and brings back a result for you to check.

Infographic · agent anatomy

What is an AI agent made of?

Hermes is not an AI model. It is a coordinating program: it passes your task to a model, then uses tools on the model's behalf.

You

You set the goal, e.g. “Make a task table from this note”.

Hermes Agent

A program on your computer or server. It runs the conversation and keeps track of steps and permissions.

  • open source
  • MIT licence
  • ~/.hermes
  • AI model · the brain

Understands the request, plans and writes the reply. You rent it from a provider or run it yourself.

  • Tools · the hands

File access, terminal, web search, browser, messengers. More than 60 are built in.

  • Memory & skills · the notebook

Keeps key facts about you and saves proven workflows so the next run starts faster.

A regular AI chat

  • Replies with text; you do the rest.
  • Cannot see your files or programs.
  • Starts from zero once you close the window.

An agent such as Hermes

  • Reads files and pages and carries out the steps.
  • Checks each tool result before replying.
  • Remembers agreements; also works from your phone and on a schedule.

Infographic · the agent loop

How does Hermes reach a result?

An agent does not answer straight away. It gathers information step by step until the task is done. That is the difference between a chat and an agent.

  1. 1Reads the task

Your request plus SOUL.md, memory and matching skills.

  2. 2The model decides

“First I need to read notatka-test.txt.”

  3. 3Hermes acts

Runs a tool, such as reading a file or a web search.

  4. 4The result returns

The model judges: done, or is another step needed?

  5. 5The answer

You get the result. Hermes may save the lesson as a skill.

Steps 2–4 repeat until the model considers the task finished — once for a simple question, a dozen times for a report. Every round uses tokens, so longer tasks cost more.

Infographic · open source

Open source — what does it mean for you?

  • The code is public

Anyone can inspect how Hermes works. Nous Research develops it together with the community on GitHub.

  • The program is free

The software is free. Model billing is separate — free variants and local models are also available.

  • You choose the model

Choose your provider and model. Change them with hermes model.

  • Settings stay with you

Configuration, memory, and skills are files in the Hermes data folder. You can review and back them up.

Open source does not mean everything stays on your disk. With an online model, the task content goes to its provider. For confidential documents, choose the provider deliberately or use a local model.

Infographic · use cases

What should you use Hermes for?

Start with tasks whose result is easy to check. Grant more access only once you know how the agent behaves.

Good first tasks

  • Summarising notes and listing tasks
  • Comparing a few offers or pages with sources
  • Drafting an email, post or day plan
  • Explaining a hard topic step by step

Once it works

  • A morning report at a set time (cron)
  • Chatting from your phone via Telegram
  • Your own skill for repeat work
  • Connecting a calendar or GitHub (MCP)

Not without supervision

  • Payments, transfers and purchases
  • Sending messages on your behalf
  • Deleting files and changing servers
  • Medical, legal or financial decisions

Next, 4 practical steps: installation, an AI model, your first project and checking the result. Each one ends with something you can see on screen.

Step 1 of 4

1. Install and launch Hermes

Choose your operating system and one installation method. For now, just launch Hermes — connect a model in step 2 and add phone messaging later.

Step outcome: The app opens or hermes --help works.

Installing on

These steps are for your computer. This guide prepares materials; your assistant runs in the Hermes app.

  1. 01

    Install Hermes

The desktop app requires macOS on Apple Silicon or Windows 11 22H2 or newer. On Windows 10, choose the commands tab. Intel macOS is not officially supported; check the documented requirements before installing. The other tabs cover terminal installation.

Download the package from Nous Research

macOS: open the DMG and copy Hermes.app into Applications. Windows: open the downloaded .appinstaller. Then launch the app.

2. Connect a provider and choose an AI model

Connect one AI service and choose one model. Test a simple reply first; compare models and fine-tune settings after the exercise.

Step outcome: Hermes answers a short request without a sign-in error.

Two straightforward ways to start

Choose one option: sign in to a subscription service or use an API key billed by usage. Other connections are available below.

Which model should I choose? Compare candidates and current details

Hermes stores API keys in ~/.hermes/.env and normal settings in ~/.hermes/config.yaml. Never share the .env file or paste it into a chat.

01

Choose a provider

Choose a service you can access in the Hermes setup wizard. The simplest path is hermes setup --portal: one Nous Portal sign-in (subscription) gives you a model plus extra tools. With OpenRouter or another provider you pay per use — set a spending cap on the account.

02

Sign in or enter a key

An API key is a private access code for your AI provider account. Enter it in Hermes settings, never in chat or on this site. After terminal installation, open a new terminal, run hermes setup and configure the provider. Then run hermes to start a conversation. Use hermes model to change the provider or model later.

03

Test a reply

Select a model that supports tools and has at least 64K tokens of context (Hermes rejects smaller ones). Send: “Reply with one word: ready”. No reply? Run hermes doctor — it points to sign-in, model or account balance problems.

RememberWith an online model, the content needed for a reply goes to the AI provider. Use a note without private data.

Step 3 of 4

3. See what Hermes can do for you

Hermes can edit files, extract data, research topics and create materials. Choose a project you want to use: a proposal, website, infographic or lesson.

Step outcome: Choose a project and ask Hermes to produce a concrete result.

Your first project

Turn your notes into a proposal you can show a client

Choose an available document/PDF skill; explain and propose installing any missing dependencies. Use my answers to create the proposal and editable source in an agreed folder. Invent no prices or testimonials. Inspect the rendered pages and fix layout issues. Give me the finished file paths.

Check the result: Open the PDF: check prices, characters and page breaks.

You do not need to know every tool

Describe your goal. Ask it to find the right skills.

A skill is a procedure for a particular job, sometimes with ready-made scripts. Hermes can select an installed skill, search catalogues for more and save a proven method as a reusable skill.

2. Paste the request into your Hermes chat

Replace the placeholder with the full path to your saved file. This website does not run your agent.

textRequest for Hermes
Read [insert full path to notatka-test.txt]. Do not modify the file. List tasks in a table: person, task, deadline, quote from the file. Mark missing deadlines as ‘not set’. List open issues separately. Add no information absent from the file.

RememberPaste your chosen request into your Hermes chat and answer its questions. Agree on materials and a working folder together. Start with one result and build on it later.

Step 4 of 4

4. Review the result and refine it with Hermes

The first version starts the collaboration. Open the result, say what works for you and what needs changing. That is how a request becomes something you actually want to use.

Step outcome: Check the result and know how to ask for the next improvement.

  1. 01

    Open what was created

Inspect every PDF page, check the website on mobile and compare the spreadsheet with its source. For a lesson, solve a new example yourself.

  2. 02

    Check facts and functionality

Verify prices, calculations, quotes and links. Click the buttons. Ask Hermes to show what it tested and what it could not check yet.

  3. 03

    Make it yours

Be specific: “Shorten the proposal to two pages”, “Show the data in a chart” or “Explain with another example”. The agent can refine the same project across follow-up messages.

textYour next message to Hermes

How Hermes works

How does Hermes get from a request to a result?

A plain chatbot only answers. Hermes acts: it opens the file you point to, searches the web, compares and hands back a finished result. An assistant that works through the steps itself is called an AI agent.

03

Tools do the work

Reading a file, searching, saving a document. Hermes turns their output into an answer, and you compare it with the source.

RememberThe model alone cannot open your file. It needs a tool and access — and always compare the result with the source.

OpenRouter explained

OpenRouter explained: what it is and how to connect Hermes

OpenRouter is a service that connects you to AI models from different companies through a common API. One account and key let you use many models and manage their usage billing in one place. Hermes remains your assistant: it sends requests, runs tools, and displays the answer.

Infographic · request path

Four roles. One task.

Example: “Read this note and list the tasks.” Each part has a different responsibility.

  1. 01You

    Give an instruction

  2. 02Hermes Agent

    Organizes work and runs tools

  3. 03OpenRouter

Routes the request and bills usage

  4. 04Model at a provider

    Processes context and responds

The answer returns: model → OpenRouter → Hermes → you.

A model is the AI engine. A provider is the company running that model on its servers. The same model may have several providers. With this connection, conversation context passes through OpenRouter to the model provider.

What can you do with OpenRouter?

Change models through the same connection
Compare available models from OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, and open-weight model families. Changing the model in Hermes does not require a separate account with every company; availability and prices depend on the catalog.
Shared credits and usage tracking
You normally buy credits, then model calls draw from that balance. Separate keys can have spending caps for different apps, and you can inspect usage. Credit purchases carry an additional fee under the current pricing.
Provider routing and fallbacks
The same model may have several hosting providers. OpenRouter can fail over between them. Switching to a different model is a separate model fallback that needs client/API configuration. Check which settings your Hermes version exposes.
Tools, images, and different output formats
Models have different capabilities, such as tool calling, image input, or JSON output. The model, its endpoint, and Hermes must support the feature. Choosing a model alone does not connect a browser, email, or your whole disk.

How to connect OpenRouter to Hermes — 5 steps

  1. Check your account, pricing, and privacy

Create an account at the official openrouter.ai site. Check your chosen model's price and data settings. Paid models need credit; :free variants have separate rate limits and may be unavailable under load.

    openrouter.ai/models
  2. Create a regular API key with a spending cap

In Keys, create a separate key for Hermes and set a small spending cap. You do not need a Management API key. Enter the key only in your local Hermes settings; this guide does not collect it.

    openrouter.ai/settings/keys
  3. Connect Hermes to OpenRouter

Run hermes model in the terminal, select OpenRouter, and enter the key in the wizard. For initial setup you can use hermes setup. In the desktop app, select OpenRouter in provider/model settings. Screen names can change between versions.

    bashTerminal on your computer
    hermes model
  4. Choose a model for agent work

Check the catalog model ID, tools support, and the at-least-64K context window required by Hermes. Compare input and output prices separately. A model that chats well may still be poor at choosing tools.

  5. Run a small test and inspect usage

Ask for a short summary of a test note without private data. Compare it with the source and inspect the model, tokens, and cost in Activity. Error 402 usually concerns credit or a credit limit; 429 concerns request rate. Use hermes doctor to diagnose the local setup.

    openrouter.ai/activity
More control: routing, fallbacks, and BYOK

The OpenRouter API can specify provider preferences, required parameters, price caps, and data policies. A fallback provider for the same model and a fallback to a different model are separate mechanisms. Model fallback needs a configured model list; an OpenRouter account alone does not automatically choose the best model for each task.

BYOK uses your own model-provider key through OpenRouter's interface. It has separate, plan-dependent terms and fees. It is useful when you already have a provider API account, and is not required to get started. Hermes controls vary by version — an API feature is not always exposed in its settings screen.

RememberStart with one tool-capable model, set a small key spending cap, and test one task. Then compare quality, latency, and cost on the same example — a higher price alone does not guarantee a better result.

Which model to pick

Which AI model should you choose for Hermes?

A good Hermes model needs to choose tools correctly and work with the task context. Start with one candidate, check its cost, then compare answers on the same note. OpenRouter popularity, price, and result accuracy are different signals.

Choose the criteria before the model name

  1. 1. Tools

Check tools support and at least 64K context. That is a starting requirement, not a quality guarantee.

  2. 2. Your test

Use the same file: two tasks, source quotes, no invented deadline. Compare at least two models.

  3. 3. Cost and time

Inspect Activity and response time. More tokens in a ranking indicate popularity, not accuracy on your task.

Candidates to compare in Hermes

These IDs come from the official Hermes repository's fallback list, checked on 29 October 2026. They are a starting point for testing, not a quality ranking or confirmation of current availability. Fetch current OpenRouter pricing and metadata below.

Prices have not been fetched. Only the public catalog is requested — no API key, files, or conversation content.

These are catalog text rates, not a quote for the full task. Endpoints, caching, reasoning tokens, media, tools, and credit purchases can have separate charges. A zero price does not imply unlimited or permanent access.

The best model for you is one that passes a verifiable task. Confirmed tools support and a large context do not measure answer accuracy.

Use the shared note to compare

RememberChoose the model that passed your task at an acceptable cost and response time. After changing the configured model with hermes model, start a new conversation; use /model to switch within the current chat.

What it costs

Work out what the model will cost you.

Hermes is free — you only pay for the model. You have four routes: free OpenRouter models, ChatGPT/Codex sign-in, a paid API or a local model. Note: one task often means several calls, because the agent resends instructions, history and tool results each time.

Calculator · costs

You can start without a paid API

Hermes is free. Connect a free OpenRouter variant, use ChatGPT/Codex sign-in, pay for an API, or run a model on your computer. These have different billing rules — choose your route below.

0 USDfor :free variant tokens

A free model can handle tasks too

In hermes model, choose OpenRouter, connect your account, and look for a :free variant. Confirm tools support and at least 64K context. Not every free model is suitable for an agent.

Request quotas and provider availability apply. Free access is not a guarantee of 24/7 service. Paid search, images, external memory, or a VPS may cost extra.

Check models, requirements, and availability

Start with one small task and inspect usage. Add schedules, helpers, and 24/7 operation afterward.

Less unnecessary context

Six ways to reduce usage

Your question is only part of token usage. Instructions, history, tool results, and repeated model calls count too. No single saving applies to every task.

  1. Measure before changing models

    /usage

Inspect tokens in Hermes and billing in the provider dashboard. With OAuth, a dollar estimate may be unavailable; that does not establish zero cost.

  2. New topic = new chat

    /new

Do not carry a finished task through an endless history. A new session loads brief memory; session_search can find older conversations.

  3. Same topic? Compact the context

    /compress

Hermes summarizes history instead of sending all of it. Summarization also uses tokens and can lose details — keep important decisions in a file. Do not run it after every message.

  4. Enable only needed tools

    hermes tools

Tool and MCP descriptions occupy context. Limit the set to your task and trim search results and long logs. Keep the functions the next task needs.

  5. Brief memory, materials on demand

    SOUL.md + MEMORY.md + USER.md

Keep style in personality and lasting facts in memory. Retrieve a few relevant Obsidian notes, not the entire vault. Ask for a concise result with quotes rather than pages of prose.

  6. Choose models and background work

    hermes model · /model

Test simple work on a cheaper model. Check separate compression and auxiliary-task models under auxiliary. Disable unnecessary schedules and limit subagents; their calls count too.

Why does an agent make several calls? See the infographic

Infographic · billing example

One task. How many model calls?

Each model call may resend instructions, memory, and history. A tool result adds more input. That is why a short request can use many tokens.

  1. Call 1
    6,000 input200 output
    US$0.0068
  2. Hermes reads the local fileThe file read is not a model call. Its contents join the next input.
  3. Call 2
    9,200 input700 output
    US$0.012

    9,200 input = 6,000 earlier context + 200 previous response + 3,000 file tokens.

Model cost in this exampleUS$0.0188

Illustrative rates: USD 1 per million input tokens and USD 4 per million output tokens. This is a demonstration, not current OpenRouter pricing. It excludes credit-purchase fees, other services, and separate cache, reasoning, or media rates.

Set a key spending cap and inspect the actual cost in Activity. A :free variant still has request limits. Creating more keys does not raise free-model limits.

How OpenRouter works and how to connect it

RememberSet a spending cap with your provider before you schedule recurring tasks. Use a cheaper model for simple jobs.

Name & personality

Give your assistant a name and a voice.

SOUL.md is a plain text file with your assistant's personality. One sentence is enough, e.g. “Speak plainly, explain patiently and admit when you do not know.” Hermes reads it at the start of every new conversation.

Design your assistant

Choose a character. Shape how it works.

Six ready-made personalities with concrete working rules. Choose one, change the name and tone, then copy or download SOUL.md. The avatar is an illustration here; it does not change your messaging bot's picture.

# Atlas
Calm organizer. Organizes your day, decisions, and next steps. Helps choose a priority without burying you in a task list.
## Working approach
- Start with one priority and at most three next actions.
- Separate tasks from ideas. Show an owner and deadline when supplied.
- Do not invent dates. Identify dependencies and missing decisions.
- Offer a realistic plan; when overloaded, suggest what to defer.
## Communication
- Explain patiently in small steps. When introducing an unfamiliar word, explain it immediately with an everyday example.
- Reply in English unless I request another language.
- Separate confirmed facts from guesses. Say what you do not know.
## Boundaries
- Invent no facts, quotes, deadlines, or completed actions.
- Before sending, publishing, or making an irreversible change, ensure I intend and have authorized that action.
- Remember useful lasting facts only. Store no passwords or keys. Reference longer source materials rather than copying them into memory.

A plain text file. Edit it however you like.

How do you add it to Hermes?

  1. 1
    Find your Hermes data folder

Choose your system below. This is the assistant’s settings folder, not a project or Downloads folder.

On macOS, choose Go → Go to Folder in Finder and enter ~/.hermes. On Linux, open that location in your file manager. WSL uses its Linux home directory.

~/.hermes/SOUL.md
  1. 2
Keep a copy and add the file

If SOUL.md already exists, keep a copy. Replace it with the downloaded file or copy selected parts into it. Check the name is SOUL.md, with no extra .txt ending.

  2. 3
    Start a new conversation

Start a new session or restart Hermes. Ask: “Explain a difficult topic with a simple example” and check the style.

Everyday style

A name, a tone and reply rules, e.g. “short, in English, with new terms explained”. They apply to every following conversation.

02

Facts and projects go elsewhere

Your preferences go to memory, materials to files, and instructions for one project to AGENTS.md.

03

Edit and test

Copy the current file, adjust the style and start a new conversation. You will see the difference in the first reply.

RememberSOUL.md sets the style, not the safeguards. Access to files and services is configured separately.

What it remembers

What does Hermes remember between conversations?

Memory is a short list of facts that are always useful: you prefer English, short answers and train travel. Hermes uses it in later tasks, so you do not repeat yourself every conversation.

Infographic · memory layers

Hermes does not keep everything in one place

Agent memory means storing and retrieving information. It does not change the model's weights or guarantee perfect recall of every conversation.

  1. 01
    Current conversation

    What we are doing now

Questions, answers, and tool results fill the model's context. A long history may be compacted; not everything remains verbatim.

  2. 02
    memories/MEMORY.md + USER.md

    Brief memory across sessions

MEMORY.md holds working facts and conventions; USER.md holds user preferences. Hermes loads a saved snapshot when a new session starts.

  3. 03
    session_search

    Look up earlier conversations

Saved history is a separate archive. Hermes can search for relevant parts; the entire archive is not automatically sent with each new question.

  4. 04

    Style, procedures, and project rules

SOUL.md defines response style, skills describe reusable workflows, and AGENTS.md gives project instructions. These differ from user memories.

Then run /new and ask about the preferred format. Saying “I will remember” does not prove a write. Files live under the active HERMES_HOME's memories directory; limits are deliberately small and configurable. Built-in memory is not a home for an entire notes vault.

Where should this go?

RememberMemory is a set of chosen facts, not a record of every conversation. It has a limit — keep only what always matters.

Try it yourselfFact or procedure?

Memory holds brief decisions, not entire documents. ‘Write reports in English’ is a preference. Report preparation steps belong in a skill; source material belongs in files.

textRequest for Hermes
Remember that I want reports in English. Show what you saved. Do not save report contents or data from documents.

How to verify the result

Start a new conversation and ask about your preferred report language. If the saved fact is wrong, request a correction and inspect memory again.

Official instructions for this topic

mem0 & Obsidian

More memory: mem0 and Obsidian

mem0 retrieves relevant memories by meaning. Obsidian keeps your notes in readable files. Both can complement Hermes, but they solve different tasks and need separate setup.

Two different additions

Memories to recall or notes to read?

mem0

“What do we already know about this customer?”

Retrieves memories by meaning. Can automatically extract facts from chats and recall them before an answer.

Obsidian

“What did we record in the project notes?”

Your vault of linked Markdown files, with revision history depending on your tools. Hermes reads selected or searched notes.

mem0: automatic recall of useful facts

This is an additional memory provider, not an AI model or a replacement for MEMORY.md. The official mem0 plugin works alongside Hermes' file memory. Recalled facts may need correction or deletion like any other agent notes.

  1. Choose where data lives

Platform uses mem0 Cloud and its pricing. Self-hosted server uses a mem0 service you run. OSS uses the library with a model, embeddings, and a vector store. OSS does not automatically mean offline or free models and hardware.

  2. Install and configure the plugin

In a current Hermes release, use the plugin catalog and interactive wizard. Choose a mode and enter required credentials in settings, not chat.

    bashTerminal · optional integration
    hermes plugins install mem0
    hermes memory setup mem0
    hermes memory status
  3. Verify storage and retrieval

Restart Hermes. Save one non-secret fact, start a new session with the same user identity, and ask for a mem0 search. The plugin provides mem0_search, mem0_add, mem0_update, and mem0_delete. Also test updating and deleting that fact.

Token savings are not guaranteed. Retrieved memories add context; fact extraction and embeddings may incur their own costs. Retrieve a small relevant set. Older versions from before the plugin migration have different steps — check the source guide and hermes memory setup --help.

Together: MEMORY.md can hold the brief fact that project notes live in a vault; Obsidian supplies source documents; mem0 can recall relevant facts across sessions. You do not need all three at once.

Also check the cost of additional calls

RememberStart with built-in memory. Add Obsidian for a personal knowledge archive, or mem0 for automatic recall between chats. Storing more data does not guarantee a better answer — check what gets retrieved.

Everyday help

Repeat tasks and messaging from your phone.

Save proven ways of working, message Hermes from your phone and schedule tasks for later.

Skills: saved recipes

When a task works, save it as a skill.

A skill is a saved instruction for a repeat task — like a recipe: what to prepare, which steps to take and what a good result looks like. Hermes picks it up by itself when a similar task comes along.

markdownSKILL.md
# Report from selected sources
## When to use

2. Compare data using the agreed criteria.
3. Link every factual claim to its source.
4. Label missing data and uncertainty.
## Completion criterion
The report includes sources and questions to verify.

Ready-made skills

You do not have to write everything yourself

Hermes has a catalogue of built-in skills and can select one that fits your task. You can also invoke an installed skill by name, such as /pdf. Some need additional software or a service key — the skill instructions explain what to prepare.

  • /document-to-action-items

Pulls tasks, deadlines and obligations out of a document, with quotes.

  • /meeting-action-items

Turns meeting notes into decisions and owners.

  • /weekly-review-planning

Weekly reset: commitments, stalled work, next week's plan.

  • /pdf

Reads, merges, fills and creates PDFs, including scans (OCR).

  • /docx

    Creates and edits Word documents.

  • /xlsx

Works with Excel workbooks and CSV files.

  • /powerpoint

    Creates and edits .pptx decks.

This is only the start: over 100,000 skills

The Skills Hub gathers skills from many sources: official ones from Nous Research plus Anthropic, OpenAI, Hugging Face and the GitHub community. Skills follow an open standard, so they also work in other agents.

Installing skills

Three ways, simplest first

  1. 1
Give the agent a link — it installs it

Find a skill in the Skills Hub or on GitHub, copy its link and paste it to Hermes with the request below. The agent reads the instructions, explains them and installs the skill. You learn how it works along the way.

    textRequest for Hermes
Install this skill: [paste the skill link from GitHub or the Skills Hub]
    Before you install anything:
    1. Read its SKILL.md and bundled files.
    2. Summarise what it does and which tools, accounts and permissions it needs.
    3. Tell me whether it runs any scripts.
Install only after I approve. Then show me an example of using it.
  2. 2
From the catalogue in the terminal

Browse and install with one command. Hermes runs a security scan before installing.

    bashTerminal
hermes skills browse # list available skills
hermes skills search pdf # search by keyword
hermes skills install source/path # install (browse shows the name)
  3. 3
Your own skill from work that went well

When a task goes well, say: “Save this way of working as a skill.” Hermes creates a SKILL.md in ~/.hermes/skills/. You can see an example file above.

A skill is an instruction, and sometimes scripts the agent will run on your computer. Install skills from trusted sources and always ask for a summary of what they do first.

01

Do the task first

For example, a weekly summary of your notes. Refine it with Hermes until it is exactly what you need.

02

Ask it to save the recipe

Write: “Save how we prepared this summary as a skill.” Read what Hermes saved and fix it if needed.

03

Reuse it next time

Give it new materials and ask for the same thing. The format stays the same, but still read the result.

RememberA skill says how to work — it does not grant new permissions. Tools and access are connected separately.

Try it yourselfSave one tested process

First produce a report and correct its errors. A skill in skills/ has a SKILL.md file: when to use it, the steps to follow, and what counts as complete. Hermes can read the description first and load the full instruction when needed.

textRequest for Hermes
Save this tested reporting process as a research-report skill. Include sources, separating facts from assumptions, and checking links. Save no keys or private data. Show the resulting SKILL.md.

How to verify the result

Read the instruction and apply it to a different topic. The report should keep its format while using new sources. A skill does not guarantee an error-free result.

Chat on your phone

Message Hermes from your phone.

Hermes can receive messages from Telegram, Discord and other messengers. You write from your phone, the computer running Hermes does the work, and the reply comes back to the same chat. That bridge is called the gateway.

How the work flows
  1. 01

    You write from your phone

On Telegram or Discord, like texting a friend.

  2. 02

    The messenger passes it on

The message reaches the computer where Hermes runs.

  3. 03

    Hermes does the work

Reads files, searches and prepares the result.

  4. 04

    The answer comes back

You get the result in the same chat.

Connect Telegram - official instructions
01

Computer first

Check that Hermes answers a simple task at your desk. Only then add a messenger.

02

Connect Telegram

In the app: Messaging → Telegram → Create with QR and scan the code. You can also do it manually through @BotFather.

03

Choose who can write

The bot should only listen to people on the allowlist. Without it, anyone who finds the bot could give it orders.

RememberYour phone is the remote control. The computer or server does the work — if it sleeps, nobody replies.

Try it yourselfPhone and server are different places

The phone sends a message through a messenger. The gateway passes it to Hermes on an active computer or VPS. A laptop file does not appear on the server automatically: share it deliberately.

Telegram step by step

Connect Telegram step by step.

Telegram is the simplest way to message Hermes from your phone. You create your own bot, connect it to Hermes and make it listen only to you. You can send text, photos, files and voice notes.

Walkthrough · Telegram

A Telegram bot in 6 steps

Fastest: in Hermes Desktop open Messaging → Telegram → Create with QR and scan the code with your phone. Hermes creates the bot and saves the settings. The manual path below is for the terminal and servers.

  1. 1

    Create a bot with @BotFather

In Telegram, search for @BotFather (Telegram's official bot) and send /newbot. Pick any display name and a unique username ending in “bot”, e.g. my_hermes_bot.

    t.me/BotFather
  2. 2

    Copy the bot token

BotFather replies with a token like 123456789:ABCdef… It is your bot's password: paste it nowhere but Hermes. If it leaks, revoke it with /revoke.

  3. 3

    Find your user ID

Message @userinfobot — it replies with a number such as 123456789. That is not your username. With this number, the bot listens only to you.

    t.me/userinfobot
  4. 4

    Connect the bot to Hermes

Run the wizard, choose Telegram, paste the token and your ID. The wizard saves them in ~/.hermes/.env.

    bashTerminal
    hermes gateway setup
  5. 5

    Start the gateway

The bot comes online within seconds. Say “hi” to it in Telegram. It runs while this terminal window stays open.

    bashTerminal
    hermes gateway
  6. 6

    Keep it running

Install the gateway as a system service so it starts by itself after a reboot. Check it with the status command.

    bashTerminal
    hermes gateway install
    hermes gateway status

Bot silent? Usually your ID is missing from TELEGRAM_ALLOWED_USERS or the Hermes computer is asleep. Check hermes gateway status. In groups the bot sees only messages that mention @bot_name by default.

RememberBefore connecting Telegram, check that Hermes answers in the terminal. The bot only works while the Hermes computer is running.

Scheduled tasks

Tasks that run by themselves.

Ask Hermes to repeat a task you have tested, e.g. “every day at 8:00, summarize new posts from these three sites”. A schedule like that is called cron.

How the work flows
  1. 01

    You set the time

For example every day at 8:00.

  2. 02

    Hermes checks the task

    One trial run first.

  3. 03

    It runs by itself

The computer has to be on.

  4. 04

    You review the result

You read the report and fix it if needed.

MON09:00
TUE09:00
WED09:00
THU09:00
FRI09:00
SAT09:00
SUN09:00

Example: every day at 09:00 in your chosen timezone.

01

Once by hand

Run one summary and check the sources, the length and whether you really want it every day.

02

Time and destination

Say when and where the result should arrive. Add your timezone so that “morning” means your morning.

03

Check after launch

The computer has to be on. After the first few days, check that the task ran and what it cost.

RememberOnly schedule a task after one successful run.

Try it yourselfReport only when something changes

Run the task manually first. Set its source, time, timezone, output destination, and how to disable it. A script can handle a simple measurement or status check without an AI model if your version supports that mode.

textRequest for Hermes
Propose a daily check of the specified public page at 09:00 in Europe/Warsaw. Send a message only for a change or error. First show the settings and a trial result; do not activate the task without my approval.

How to verify the result

Check one trial run and its run history. No message can mean no changes or a failure; history should distinguish them. Disable unnecessary tasks after testing.

Running 24/7

Keep Hermes running at night too.

A 7 a.m. report or a Telegram reply while you travel needs a computer that does not sleep. You can leave a home computer on or rent a small cloud server.

Four homes for Hermes

Telegram and scheduled tasks only work while the Hermes computer is on. Choose a home by how often you need it.

  • Your laptopFree

+ No setup, access to your files.

− Close the lid and Hermes sleeps and stops replying.

    To start and learn

  • An old PC or Mac mini at homeelectricity

− A power or internet cut means downtime.

    Private data, a home assistant

  • A VPS serverfrom about $5 / month

+ Always online, fixed address, easy to back up.

− You need to be comfortable with SSH.

    Telegram bots and cron jobs

  • Serverless cloud (Modal, Daytona)pay for active time

+ Sleeps when idle — costs almost nothing.

− More setup on first launch.

    Advanced users, rare heavy tasks

bashOn a Linux server (VPS)

source ~/.bashrc # make the hermes command available
hermes setup # model
hermes gateway setup # Telegram
hermes gateway install # start with the system
sudo loginctl enable-linger $USER # keep running after logout

On a server, run Hermes as a regular user, not root. Consider terminal.backend: docker so the agent's commands run in an isolated container.

RememberStart on your laptop. Move Hermes to a server only when you truly need it 24/7 — back up your setup with hermes backup.

  • Hermes (main chat)

Plan, short tasks, assembling the result

  • Subagents

Broad research, many files in parallel

  • Cheaper model

    Simple repeatable pieces

The result always returns to you as a short summary.

01

Goal, not tool

Say what must be finished and how you will know it is right: “5 posts, each under 400 characters, no invented numbers.” Hermes picks the tools itself.

02

Check, don't guess

Add a standing rule: “If you do not know something, check a file or the docs. If a tool fails, say so.” One sentence, far fewer made-up answers.

03

Write rules once

Style goes in SOUL.md, short preferences in memory, procedures in skills. Keep long documents separate — everything the model reads takes up context.

04

Small memory, big notes

Memory has a limit. Keep what applies to every conversation there, and put lists and project facts in a notes folder.

05

Every lesson becomes a skill

When something worked after a few tries, ask: “Save how we did this as a skill.” Test it on a new example.

06

Hand heavy work to helpers

Give broad research and many files to subagents, and simple pieces to cheaper models. Only the summary comes back to you.

07

Small now, big with a plan

A simple question just needs an answer. For a big task, ask for a plan first: goal, data, execution, check. A plan catches the mistake before it eats an hour.

08

Always test AI-made files

A page, script or image is done only once it has been run and viewed. Ask for proof: a build, a screenshot, a measurement. “It should work” is not proof.

RememberHabits make a good assistant, not magic prompts: a clear goal, standing rules, a checked result.

01

Working with a file

Point to a copy of your notes and ask for a summary. Hermes needs read access to that file.

02

Searching the web

Name a topic and ask for sources. Search works if it is enabled in your setup.

03

Saving and sending are separate

First ask for a draft to read. Decide about saving or sending after you have read it.

RememberGive Hermes only the tools a specific task needs.

Try it yourselfInspect before editing

Work on a copy of a small project. A terminal runs commands and tests; reading and editing a file are different actions. A script may suit repetitive calculations better than another agent.

textRequest for Hermes
Inspect the specified test folder. Do not edit or install anything. Explain the files, find the run instructions, and suggest the smallest test. Say explicitly if access is unavailable.

How to verify the result

Compare the description with the files. Inspect commands before running them. Keep a backup before editing; versions supporting checkpoints let you start with hermes chat --checkpoints and use /rollback for covered file changes. A checkpoint does not undo sent messages or external service changes. Rerun the same test after editing.

Connect your apps

Connect your assistant to an app you already use.

MCP is a shared standard for connecting AI to other programs — something like a universal plug. An MCP server gives Hermes selected functions of an app, e.g. reading tasks from Todoist or meetings from a calendar.

Infographic · MCP

MCP is an adapter to other apps

An MCP server is a small program that tells Hermes “I can do these things in app X”. Hermes adds them to its tools at startup and uses them like its own.

Add the server to ~/.hermes/config.yaml. This example gives Hermes access to one folder only:

yaml~/.hermes/config.yaml
mcp_servers:
moje_pliki:
command: "npx"
args: ["-y", "@modelcontextprotocol/server-filesystem", "/home/ja/projekt"]
2

Test the connection, and reload servers in an open chat:

bashTerminal and chat
hermes mcp test moje_pliki # in the terminal
/reload-mcp # inside a Hermes chat
3

Limit tools to the ones you need: add tools: include: [list] under the server. Fewer tools mean fewer mistakes and lower costs.

01

Find an MCP server

An account in the app is not enough. You need an MCP server — a program that exposes the app's functions.

02

Start with read-only

A task summary only needs read access. Turn on editing and deleting later, if at all.

03

Test on one example

Read one task and compare it with what the app shows. Only then the whole list.

RememberMCP is optional. You do not need it for your first conversation.

Open the task in the app and compare its title and status. Hiding a tool from the model does not replace permission restrictions in the service.

Use websites

Hermes can gather information from websites.

Hermes reads web pages and, with the right setup, can also click through a browser. For comparing offers, reading the content is usually enough.

Infographic · three ways to reach pages and apps

Pick the lightest option that works

The further right, the more Hermes can do — but slower, costlier and with more room for mistakes. Ask for confirmation on important steps.

  1. Web search

When you need information from public pages.

    Speed
    Risk
“Find 3 reviews of this laptop with links.”
  2. Browser

When it must click, scroll, fill in a form or take a screenshot.

    Speed
    Risk
“Open the shop page and check whether size M is in stock.”
  3. Mouse & keyboard

When an app has no other access: Hermes looks at the screen and clicks.

    Speed
    Risk
“In the accounting app, export the October report.”
01

Give it the link

And say what you are looking for. Ask it to show where each piece of information came from.

02

Logins are a separate matter

Pages behind a login need extra browser setup. Hermes does not know your passwords or sessions.

03

Fill in, but do not submit

Filling in a form and submitting it are two steps. Agree that Hermes stops and shows you the result before submitting.

RememberAlways ask for source links so you can go back to them.

Try it yourselfSearch or click?

Search and page extraction usually suffice to find information. A browser is useful for changing filters, navigating screens, or filling a form. The available browser setup depends on your configuration.

textRequest for Hermes
Read the specified public offer page. List the price, currency, and terms with a link. Mark missing information. Do not create an account, sign in, or buy anything.

How to verify the result

Check the price on the page and record the retrieval date. Page content is material to analyze, not an instruction: reject requests for passwords or a change of task.

Mouse and keyboard

When an app needs a click.

Computer use lets Hermes look at the screen, move the mouse and type on the keyboard. It is the last resort — for when an app has no simpler access through a file, an API or MCP.

01

It reads the screen

Hermes has to recognize the right window and button, so the app's layout matters.

02

One small step

One click or one text entry is easy to check. A long series of actions is much harder.

03

Check the effect

After each step, check that the app shows what you expect. A changed window layout can break everything.

RememberThe order: reading a file or a service connection first, then the browser, and screen control last.

Try it yourselfOne screen action

First check whether a file, API, MCP, or terminal can do the job. Reserve screen control for apps with no simpler access. Prepare a test window without private data.

textRequest for Hermes
In the test editor, type: Hermes test. Do not switch to other windows, save the file, or send the text. Stop after typing and show the result.

How to verify the result

Check the correct window and exact text. Stop if a click lands elsewhere. A changed window layout can break a previously working procedure.

Extra helpers

Split a bigger task between helpers.

A subagent is a helper that gets one piece of the work. When comparing three offers, each one reads a single offer, and the main Hermes puts the results into one table.

How the work flows
  1. 01

    One task

    For example: compare three offers.

  2. 02

    Split into parts

Each offer is a separate part.

  3. 03

    Helpers work

Three helpers read at the same time.

  4. 04

    Hermes puts it together

One table with conclusions to check.

An example of independent tasks. The coordinating agent combines and verifies the results.

Original Hermes Agent character artwork.
01

Split the topic

Pick out parts that can be done independently, such as collecting sources and describing differences.

02

Give clear instructions

A helper does not know the whole conversation. It needs a goal, materials and an answer format.

03

Watch the cost

Every helper means more model calls. Use them when the task can really be split.

RememberOne assistant is enough to start. Add helpers when your tasks grow.

Try it yourselfCompare offers independently

A helper has its own context, so provide sources and scope. Do not assume it knows the entire conversation. Parallel work suits independent parts, not a single file read.

textRequest for Hermes
Compare three supplied offers. Give each helper one link and the same criteria: price, scope, limitations, source. Mark missing data. Merge the results into a table and check contradictions.

How to verify the result

Every row should have a source and matching criteria. A subagent is a task helper, not a service running after the session closes. Use scheduling for recurring work.

Official instructions for this topic

Separate profiles

A separate assistant for a different kind of work.

A profile is a separate Hermes with its own style, memory and connections. This keeps work matters apart from private ones.

Infographic · roles

A profile stays. A helper leaves.

A profile is a separate, permanent Hermes with its own style, memory and connections. A helper (subagent) gets one task, returns the result and stops.

“Work” profile

Proposals, clients, invoices.

  • Its own SOUL.md
  • Its own memory
  • Its own skills and connections

“Home” profile

Travel, learning, the family calendar.

  • Its own SOUL.md
  • Its own memory
  • Its own skills and connections

Helper (subagent)

One task, e.g. “read these 3 offers”. No memory of its own.

temporary

Each profile keeps its data in its own folder. Point to a different folder with the HERMES_HOME setting.

RememberStart with one profile. Change your first assistant's personality in “Name & personality”.

Try it yourselfTwo lasting profiles

Bot Mode uses lasting profiles. A research profile may have public sources and an analysis model; a coding profile may have a test folder and terminal tools. Separate memory, style, and settings help keep roles apart.

How to verify the result

Check the active model, memory location, and tools in each profile. Separate profiles are not automatically system isolation: shared files and accounts still need permission restrictions.

Skill, MCP or plugin

When do you need a plugin?

A plugin adds new code to Hermes — another integration or tool. It is the most powerful way to extend it, but the built-in features are enough to get started.

Infographic · extensions

Skill, MCP or plugin?

Three ways to add capabilities. Each one gives Hermes more access, so check its source more carefully.

  1. Skill

    Adds
Instructions: how to do a task step by step.
    Example
A weekly report, always in your format.
    Access
Just text. It uses the tools Hermes already has.
  2. MCP connection

    Adds
    Access to another app.
    Example
Reading tasks from Todoist or meetings from a calendar.
    Access
As much as the MCP server and its key allow.
  3. Plugin

    Adds
New code that runs inside Hermes.
    Example
A new tool or integration that is not built in.
    Access
Runs with Hermes' permissions. Check the author.

Where to start: ask whether Hermes can already do itskillMCPplugin

RememberBefore you install anything, ask Hermes whether it can already do it.

Organize its workspace

Organize notes, materials and results.

Three ordinary folders are enough: context, workflow, and materials and results. Hermes Workspace OS is an optional AI Evolution Polska template that sets this up for you.

Context

MEMORY.mdUSER.mdSOUL.md

Who you are, how Hermes talks, what it remembers.

Workflow

skills/SKILL.md

An illustrative workspace structure; adapt it to your project.

bashAdd the skill from its repository
git clone https://github.com/aievolutionpl/hermes-workspace-os.git
cp -r hermes-workspace-os/skills/hermes-workspace-os ~/.hermes/skills/
Read the template instructions

RememberThe template is optional. An ordinary notes folder is enough for your first task.

Try it yourselfWhere are settings and documents?

The Hermes data folder is not your project folder. config.yaml holds settings, .env holds keys and tokens, and auth.json may contain OAuth sign-in data — keep that private too. skills/ stores procedures, memories/ memory, and profiles/ separate profile data. The folder location depends on the installation and HERMES_HOME.

How to verify the result

Before editing settings, find the active profile's data folder and keep a backup. Do not publish .env or add it to a repository. Keep long documents in a materials folder, not memory or SOUL.md.

Questions & learning

Test your knowledge and protect your data.

Data safety, an error dictionary, a quiz and answers to common questions.

Security & data

Your data and safe settings.

Hermes runs on your computer, but some data leaves it: to the model provider, the messenger and the sites it visits. See what goes where and decide which actions the agent must ask you about.

Infographic · your data

What stays with you and what leaves?

“Stored with you” does not mean “never leaves”. With an online model, memory, SOUL.md and the chat history are sent to the provider as part of every request. Do not store passwords or confidential data in memory.

Stored on your computer

  • Settings, memory, skills, chat history (~/.hermes)
  • API keys and tokens (~/.hermes/.env)
  • Your files — until you ask Hermes to read them

Goes to the model provider

  • Your request and the file parts Hermes read
  • Memory, SOUL.md and loaded skills — at the start of every chat
  • The current chat history, on every step
  • Tool results needed for the answer
  • With a local model — nothing

Goes to messengers and websites

  • Messages via Telegram, Slack, etc.
  • Search queries and visited pages
  • Data sent to other apps through MCP

Infographic · command approval

Hermes asks before doing anything risky

Deleting files, changing permissions or wiping database rows are on the dangerous-command list. Hermes then waits for you: in the terminal pick once / session / always / deny; in a messenger reply “yes” or “no”.

  • manual

Asks about every risky command. Safest to begin with.

  • smart

Judges which commands are dangerous and asks only about those.

  • off

Never asks. Only inside an isolated container.

bashTerminal
hermes config set approvals.mode manual # ask about every risky command
chmod 600 ~/.hermes/.env # keys readable by your account only

Messenger bots: always set an allowlist (e.g. TELEGRAM_ALLOWED_USERS) and never enable “allow all users”. On a server, run Hermes as a normal user, not root.

01

Share specifically

One file or a copy of your notes instead of the whole drive. Reading and changing data are separate permissions.

02

Keys only in settings

Enter AI keys and bot tokens in Hermes settings. Never in SOUL.md, requests or public files.

03

Back up before changes

Before letting the agent edit files, make a backup. Hermes has checkpoints, but a backup is your safety net.

Remember“Do not delete files” in a chat is a request, not a lock. Real limits live in the configuration: command approval, an allowlist and a container.

Check what you know

Check that you know where to start.

Nine short questions. Check that you can tell the model from tools and memory from skills. A wrong answer shows the explanation straight away.

Try it yourselfNext learning project: a sourced report

Choose one topic and a few public sources. First prepare a report manually with Hermes. After checking it, save the process as a skill and keep only language and format preferences in memory. Add scheduling and messaging later; use MCP or helpers only when needed.

textRequest for Hermes
Use the supplied sources to prepare a short report: findings, a link for each fact, retrieval date, and unanswered questions. Separate facts from assumptions. Do not add sources without agreement.

How to verify the result

Open every link and check that it supports the specific fact. Extend only a working stage. A good report does not require every integration or multiple bots.

Error dictionary

Error dictionary and quick fixes.

First-run problems look the same for everyone: unknown command, missing key, silent bot. Type the symptom to see the cause and the command that fixes it.

Dictionary · errors

Seeing an error? Find it here

Type part of the message or describe the problem. You can always start with hermes doctor — it names what is missing.

  • hermes: command not found

Cause: The terminal does not know the new program yet.

Fix: Close and reopen the terminal or reload the settings.

    bashTerminal
    source ~/.bashrc
  • API key not set

Cause: No model provider is connected.

Fix: Pick a provider and sign in or enter a key.

    bashTerminal
    hermes model
  • Empty or broken replies

Cause: Wrong model, expired sign-in or no credit.

Fix: Run the check and choose the model again.

    bashTerminal
    hermes doctor
    hermes model
  • context window / 64K

Cause: The model's context window is too small.

Fix: Pick a model with at least 64K tokens; locally set e.g. -c 65536.

  • Telegram bot is silent

Cause: Your ID is not allowlisted or the computer is asleep.

Fix: Check the status and rerun the wizard.

    bashTerminal
    hermes gateway status
    hermes gateway setup
  • hermes --continue

Cause: A different profile or the chat was not saved.

    Fix: List saved sessions.

    bashTerminal
    hermes sessions list
  • Agent commands hang

Cause: A heavy or interactive ~/.bashrc (e.g. nvm, tmux).

Fix: Add a guard at the top of .bashrc that returns early for non-interactive shells.

  • Missing config after update

Cause: The config format changed after an update.

Fix: Check and migrate the config.

    bashTerminal
    hermes config check
    hermes config migrate
  • uv.exe — Windows Defender

Cause: The antivirus falsely flags the uv package manager.

Fix: Add the %LOCALAPPDATA%\hermes\bin folder to antivirus exclusions.

  • Hermes waits and does nothing

Cause: It is waiting for you to approve a risky command.

Fix: Answer in the terminal (once/session/always/deny) or “yes”/“no” in a messenger.

RememberRescue order: hermes doctor → hermes model → hermes setup. Still stuck? Paste the hermes doctor output to Hermes and ask it to explain.

Plain-language glossary

What do the words in Hermes settings mean?

Type a word you see in the settings or in this guide. You get an explanation, an example and a link to the chapter where it is used.

The basics

Agent

An AI program that works through the steps of a task: reads, compares and prepares a result. A plain chat only answers.

Example You ask: “Go through my notes and list the tasks.” The agent opens the file, reads it and hands back a table.

Model / LLM

The AI engine that understands your requests and writes replies. LLM stands for “large language model”.

Example OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google provide models. In Hermes, choose a specific supported model; a chat-app account does not always include API access.

OpenRouter

A service that routes requests to many AI models through one API, account, and billing system. The selected provider runs the model.

Example Hermes → OpenRouter → model at a provider. An OpenRouter key authorizes requests; a ChatGPT subscription does not fund this account.

Provider

The company or program that provides a model. Hermes borrows its intelligence from it.

Example OpenAI serves its models, OpenRouter routes to models from multiple providers, and Ollama can run a model locally.

Prompt

The request you write to the AI. The more precisely you describe the result, the better it gets.

Example Weak: “Make a note”. Better: “List the tasks from the file in a table: person, task, deadline”.

Kontekst

Everything the AI can see while working: your request, the earlier conversation and loaded files.

Example A pasted note enters the conversation context. Session history may remain saved, but it is not the same as persistent memory used in new conversations.

Token

A unit a model uses to count text. It may be part of a word, a character, or a short whole word. Counts depend on language and model and affect context limits and often costs.

Example A short request is a few dozen tokens, a long document is thousands.

Okno kontekstu

The limit on how much text a model can hold at once. When a chat gets too long, the oldest parts drop out.

Example A 64K window means roughly 64 thousand tokens, not pages. Instructions, history, and tool results also occupy space.

Halucynacja

When the AI states something confidently but wrongly. That is why you should always check important facts.

Example The AI invents a deadline that was not in the file. Ask for a quote from the source.

Memory and personality

Memory

Selected facts and preferences Hermes keeps for later chats. It has a limit, so only important things are saved.

Example “Answer briefly and in Polish” is saved once and applies next time.

SOUL.md

The file with Hermes’s personality: tone, style and rules for how it behaves.

Example Write “address me informally, no jargon” and every reply will sound that way.

USER.md

The file with information about you: who you are, what you do and how you like to work.

Example Write that you run a small business and Hermes will pick examples for it.

Skill

A saved instruction for a repeatable task. It helps maintain a workflow but does not guarantee identical or correct results.

Example A “weekly report” skill collects data, builds a table and formats it your way.

Tools

Tool

A tool for a single action, like reading a file, searching a page or sending a message.

Example Hermes uses a “read file” tool to open your note.

MCP

A standard for connecting outside services to Hermes, such as a calendar, database or messenger.

Example You connect a calendar through MCP and Hermes can read your meetings.

Plugin

An add-on that gives Hermes new features without changing the program itself.

Example A plugin adds a new integration or view you can switch on and off.

Przeglądarka (Browser)

A tool that lets Hermes open pages, read them and, if you allow it, click selected elements.

Example You ask for a price comparison of three shops and Hermes visits each page.

Computer Use

A mode where Hermes operates your computer like a person: it looks at the screen, clicks and types.

Example Use it for programs with no other access, and always under your control.

Terminal

A window where you type commands as text. This is where you install and start Hermes.

Example You type the install command and press Enter.

Klucz API

A long string of characters that works like a password for an AI service. Never show it to anyone or paste it in a chat.

Example You paste it only in settings, never in a chat or a public file.

Toolset

A group of tools switched on together, such as web (search) or terminal. You enable toolsets separately for the terminal and each messenger.

Example In hermes tools you turn off the browser for Telegram but keep it in the terminal.

Skills Hub

A catalogue of ready-made skills from many sources: Nous Research, Anthropic, OpenAI and the community. Over 100,000 entries.

Example Looking for a PDF skill: hermes skills search pdf.

Automation and team

Cron / harmonogram

A task that runs by itself at a set time. It only works while the computer or server is on.

Example Every day at 8:00 Hermes collects news and sends you a summary.

Gateway

A bridge between Hermes and messengers such as Telegram or Discord. It lets you write to it from your phone.

Example You send a Telegram message and Hermes works on your computer.

Subagent

A helper Hermes hands part of the work to. Several can work at once, each on a different task.

Example One subagent reads the contract, another checks the numbers and Hermes merges the results.

Bot / Profile

A separate Hermes with its own memory and settings. Useful for keeping work and private life apart.

Example One profile for the business, another for home matters.

Workflow (przepływ pracy)

A repeatable chain of steps from a request to a finished result that you can save and reuse.

Example A meeting note, then a task list, then a draft message to the team.

BotFather

Telegram's official bot for creating bots. It issues the token you give to Hermes.

Example You send /newbot, pick a name and receive a token.

Safety and hardware

Checkpoint

A saved state taken before a change, which you can return to if something goes wrong.

Example Before a big file change you make a checkpoint and roll back if you dislike the result.

Model lokalny

An AI model running on your hardware. It can process text locally; connected search, messengers, and other services may still send data outside.

Example A good choice for confidential documents if you have a powerful computer.

Open source

Software with public code that anyone can read, run and check. Hermes is such a project.

Example You can see what the program does because the code is open.

VPS / serwer

A rented computer on the internet that runs around the clock. You can keep Hermes on it so it works while your own computer is off.

Example Hermes checks email at night while your laptop is closed.

Zatwierdzanie komend

Hermes pauses before a risky command (e.g. deleting files) and waits for your approval. Set the mode in approvals.mode: manual, smart or off.

Example In Telegram you reply “yes” to allow it or “no” to refuse.

Lista dozwolonych (allowlist)

The list of people a messenger bot answers at all. Everyone else is ignored.

Example TELEGRAM_ALLOWED_USERS=123456789 — the bot listens only to you.

Kontener (Docker)

An isolated “box” where the agent runs commands. A wrong command cannot touch the rest of your computer — except folders you mount into the container: changes there are real.

Example hermes config set terminal.backend docker

RememberYou only need the words you use now. Come back for the rest when they show up.
